Mrs Bayley's - Volume and Capacity

Image
Mrs Bayley's Maths Class We have been learning about Volume and Capacity. We have been focussing on how much a container can hold. We learnt that not all containers are equal. Some hold a larger or the most or the biggest amount compared to some containers that hold the smallest or least. We had great fun discovering and investigating this! Take a look at our work!

Volume and Capacity

Image
At the moment our maths focus is on volume and capacity . Today Miss Courtney's and Miss Hollings' maths classes worked together to build creations out of the materials we have around the classroom. Once we finished, we took a look at all of the creations and discussed which ones had the biggest capacity and which ones had the smallest. We noticed that the tallest ones are not always the ones with the biggest capacity. Here are some of our masterpieces!

Miss Hollings' Superstar Writers!

Today in writing, Miss Hollings' class practised writing our fast words. We have three minutes to write as many words as we can. Every week we are getting better and better. Take a look at some of our words from today :)

Miss Courtney's Buddy WOW Word Writing

Image
Miss Courtney's writing class have been focussing on WOW words! These are descriptive words that make our writing exciting to read. We got to work in buddies for our writing, which we loved. We were given a simple sentence and had to add WOW words to make it more interesting. Our simple sentence was "The lion is roaring." Felicity and Joel worked together to make it better. Their finished story said, "The big scary lion is golden and brown . He is roaring at his favourite food and it is hot and dry . He is very  hot and he has sharp teeth." We then discussed the things we liked about working in pairs. "I like working together because we can share ideas." - Craig "I think it is cool because you can talk about your writing with your friend." - Kaitlin "I loved it because my buddy could help me spell the words." - Florize We also loved the idea of writing on whiteboards as it was super easy to rub off if we made ...

Matariki Celebration

Image
Today at South Hornby School we got a chance to celebrate Matariki - The Māori New Year. This term our topic has been all about Matariki. We love getting to show our whānau all of the fantastic work we have been doing at school. To end the day, we got to go outside and fly our kites together. It was so much fun!

Miss Hollings' Reading

Image
Yesterday in reading, our whole class did prior knowledge activities based on the books we were going to read that day.  We are learning that we can use what we already know to make inferences in a story!  In our groups we had a think about what we already knew about feeling nervous, rats and Greedy Cat. We then recorded our ideas onto paper. We then shared our ideas back to the whole class. Check out these hard workers :)

Little Kiwi's Matariki

Image
In Miss Hollings' reading class, we read the story 'Little Kiwi's Matariki'. Before we started, we talked about what we thought might happen using our prior knowledge to help us predict. Miss Hollings recorded our ideas for us. After we had read the story, we shared what we had learnt. It was so much fun. We really enjoyed making tukutuku and stars after learning why they are important to Matariki!

Miss Courtney's Reading

Image
Today the Tui group read a book that shared information about wind. Once they had finished the story, they did a follow up activity to share what they had learnt. We did some ideas together before they went off to complete the activity independently. They then shared their information back to the rest of Miss Courtney's reading children. Take a look!

Mia's Reading

Image
Today Mia was in a group all my herself, so she did a Prior Knowledge activity before reading the story. The book for today was called Baby Bear's Present. Mia had a think about her favourite present and drew a picture of it. Mia's favourite present is her dolls. We then read the story and found out that Baby Bear got a big blue car as his present. She thought they were both very lucky to get such wonderful presents.

Miss Hollings' Writing

Today in writing, Miss Hollings organised for us to try out some candy floss! We are learning to talk about our senses and share our ideas to a buddy. Check out the amazing ideas Ma'ake had about his experience - " It sounds like a wave coming when you squish it. It smelt like a lollipop. It was chewy and melted into little bits of sugar."

Wet Lunch Time

Today the weather was so cold and miserable that we stayed inside. Our teachers had set up some fun activities for us to do with our wet weather monitors from Pūnui-o-toka. We love playing with them. Look at some of us being busy bees!
