Miss Hollings' Reading

Image
Yesterday in reading, our whole class did prior knowledge activities based on the books we were going to read that day.  We are learning that we can use what we already know to make inferences in a story!  In our groups we had a think about what we already knew about feeling nervous, rats and Greedy Cat. We then recorded our ideas onto paper. We then shared our ideas back to the whole class. Check out these hard workers :)

Little Kiwi's Matariki

Image
In Miss Hollings' reading class, we read the story 'Little Kiwi's Matariki'. Before we started, we talked about what we thought might happen using our prior knowledge to help us predict. Miss Hollings recorded our ideas for us. After we had read the story, we shared what we had learnt. It was so much fun. We really enjoyed making tukutuku and stars after learning why they are important to Matariki!

Miss Courtney's Reading

Image
Today the Tui group read a book that shared information about wind. Once they had finished the story, they did a follow up activity to share what they had learnt. We did some ideas together before they went off to complete the activity independently. They then shared their information back to the rest of Miss Courtney's reading children. Take a look!

Mia's Reading

Today Mia was in a group all my herself, so she did a Prior Knowledge activity before reading the story. The book for today was called Baby Bear's Present. Mia had a think about her favourite present and drew a picture of it. Mia's favourite present is her dolls. We then read the story and found out that Baby Bear got a big blue car as his present. She thought they were both very lucky to get such wonderful presents.

Miss Hollings' Writing

Image
Today in writing, Miss Hollings organised for us to try out some candy floss! We are learning to talk about our senses and share our ideas to a buddy. Check out the amazing ideas Ma'ake had about his experience - " It sounds like a wave coming when you squish it. It smelt like a lollipop. It was chewy and melted into little bits of sugar."

Wet Lunch Time

Today the weather was so cold and miserable that we stayed inside. Our teachers had set up some fun activities for us to do with our wet weather monitors from Pūnui-o-toka. We love playing with them. Look at some of us being busy bees!

Miss Hollings' Maths

Image
In Miss Hollings' maths class, we are learning to identify which numbers come before and after numbers up to 100. Today Miss Hollings set up two stations for us to work on to help us learn this skill. Half the class was playing the game 'Caterpillar Ordering' from the website top marks on our class iPads, while the other was practising writing our numbers to 100 using hundred's boards to help. You can practise this at home too!

Miss Courtney's Reading - Contractions

Image
Miss Courtney's reading children have been learning about contractions this week. We found this tricky at the beginning but now we are almost masters at it. Take a look at Maddy, Kaylee and Austin, who were able to match all the contraction cards independently! Well done!!

Miss Hollings' Reading

This week in Miss Hollings' reading class, the Ruru, Brown Kiwi and Kea groups have been working on talking about what happens at the beginning, middle and end of a story. Once we have thought about it ourselves, shared our ideas with a buddy and then shared back to the group, we went off and drew comic strips to show the main events in sequence. Check out these super star readers!
